It was in the car when I bought it 8 years ago. The '69s did not have a roll-bar option so it was installed later, but I have no info regarding that. I would agree with Jim that it would be cheaper to have someone make one rather than ship such a heavy bulky item. I like the idea of having the rollbar, so I'll keep it in the car. It has been wrapped in closed cell insulation so I have no idea if it was manufactured or hand-crafted until I unwrap it. At that time I will be sure to take lots of pics and post them so others can see how this one was done.

Rollbar

Had a few minutes so I went out to investigate.

Wrestled the bottom of the back seat out. Practically had to bend it in half to clear the rollbar. Discovered that this rollbar is not going anywhere. It is welded in at all four mounting points. Well, that should really make the unibody ridgid and maybe improve the handling a little bit?

It is upholstered, not wrapped in insulation like I thought. It makes thick padding and had to be worked at the points where the top linkage comes by in order to fit without ripping the carpeting, which was then wrapped in duct tape, ugly but functional. This will be reworked somehow.

So, I'm guessing the rollbar may have been custom-made. It definitely is not a bolt-in type. It did retain the rear seat, which I think is a bonus. And it's going to stay right where it is. One more reason to think renovation rather than restoration.
Been working on getting organized and moving all the cars into one location, racking 'em up, pulling the tires and getting some weather protection. Here's the fleet today, not counting Celeste (subject of this thread) who is in the garage.

Got my box today, now I have the parts to rebuild the ignition, replace the timing belt & tensioner and replace the old water pump. Then we get to see if it will start!!! Aint they shiney????!!!!

Fan, Tensioner & Dizzy questions

I'm really wanting to make some progress but I need some info.

Cooling Fan - Water Pump:
I'm replacing the water pump, which necessitates removing the fan. It is held by one BIG nut. Anyone know what size this thing is?

Tensioner Bearing:
I am replacing the bearing, even though the old one is still tight (better safe than sorry, right?). I see how this all fits together, but how do I take it apart and put it back together? That spring looks pretty stiff. Also, do I have to pull the bearing and press the new one on?

Dizzy (the car, not me):
I am replacing the cap, rotor, points, condensor, coil, wires, plugs. I don't see an obvious way to pull the centrifugal advance with the dizzy in place so I'm thinking I'll pull it out and check out everything and rebuild it on the bench before putting it back in. I am a bit concerned about not getting it in right, but I've done this once before (many, many years ago). Or, is there a way to pull the advance in situ and replace the points?

These are the things that have me on hold this morning. I really wanted to see if this thing would run by this evening. Maybe not. Oh well, meantime I can continue dismantling the '82 before the unibody goes to the crusher (far too rusted to save).

Back off on the nut closest to the tensioner bearing. You should be able to to move the assembly.Pry it and tighten it back down to hold it over so new belt can be installed. I changed mine a couple weeks ago and did not have any problem with removing or installing bearing. Was not pressed on. Maybe stuck a little but not pressed. After installing new belt, use loosen off nut and make sure belt pulls tight. Tighten nut. Nothin to it.

Actually, my question is how to replace the tensioner bearing while changing out timing belts. I was able to loosen, move and tighten the assembly to get the old belt off. My concern is how to change out the bearings, hopefully in an easy way.

I had no trouble removing mine. May need a little persuading. If you had a gear puller you might could make it work. Carefull not to damage the stud.

Horny & Dizzy Celeste

Been cleaning and tinkering. Here's the latest two things of interest:

Horn - the horn mount appears to have been three layers of angled mount, or one that has delaminated and it is twisting apart.

Pulled the distributor to look it over and noticed this thin plastic cover (or whatever) has turned brittle (in only 42 years) and broken up. As best I can figure all those little pieces had to drop through the gear ring below and into the oil pan.

So what do I do about either of these little problems? Obviously the dizzy problem is much more important that remounting the horn. I don't even know if you can get this little plastic piece. Time to go check the vendors.
