Bang for your buck???

Post by meangreenspider »

What is the performance upgrade that offers the most bang for your buck on the fuel injected models?

There aren't a lot of options for the FI cars, other than perhaps removing the cat and installing a performance exhaust system (depending on where you live). Other than that, you are looking at a turbo set-up with aftermarket FI system such as megasquirt, etc. -- which is really expensive -- and/or getting into the internals of the engine.

You might want to think about some 8.9 flat top pistons or a 1800 head, Marks FI cams and exhaust and lighten the flywheel.

Carl, thats what I did with my FI.- 1800 head with big valves and 84.4 mm 8.9 pistons. Headers, strait pipe... took cat out, and shaved flywheel, balanced and a marked improvement..love it. If the loot is there this winter, I'll do the adjustable cam wheels. perhaps even Marks cams, buis. just has to pick up.

thanks for the advice. I previously purchased a header and dual tip muffler, will hopeflly have it installed by the end of next week. New cams will come shortly after!

Any recomendations on size of exhaust pipe? 2", 2 1/4 etc . The header pipe is 2"

Both of my engines are 1800s though, so that may have something to do with it.

Best bang for your buck is definitely a lightened flywheel.

Beyond that you'll be opening up the engine, which isn't a TON of money but you start saying things like "well while I'm in there.." and you end up spending more than you planned.

P.S. I forgot to say. Please make sure your engine is properly tuned!!! Tuning is the other best bang for your buck that everyone seems to overlook. I can't begin to tell you how many engines I've seen where people pour thousands of dollars into performance goodies and end up making less power than stock because of a poor tune. Tuning is most important!
