Shock Tower

Post by mosiacspider »

Hello All,

I would appreciate some feedback.

I have a 77 spider (for a week) and just replaced my 2 upper ball joints and an inner tie rod end. The shock towers wouldn't pass inspection so I had them repaired. Turns out the fellow grinded down the towers and decided to wrap the entire tower with new metal.

I picked up the car today and the ride home was extremely stiff. Has anyone experienced something similar? I'm worried that wraping the towers will do more harm than good.

Thanks

Dan

That to me does not sound all that safe. Did he treat the rust in any way? Why didn't he help you find new ones as they are available at several of us vendors? Has he worked on Fiats before? I am a little torn on the way he fixed your issue. Good luck bud.

First if the ride seems stiffer it could be due to a few things, bad shocks or, if he had removed the control arms and then tighten them down without the full weight of the car on them it may be binding the bushings. I would love to see pics of his repair to your shock towers as I have the same issue. If he just wrapped metal around to COVER up the rust then probably not a safe repair especially if they looked like mine:

Thanks guys, turns out the front shocks were bad. Kind of odd since this had been inspected a week prior and the care rode nicely.

The shock tower rust was not as bad as your picture. I'll post some pics. This was a temporary fix and I plan to buy the replacement towers.
