OK, The problem started a week ago and is getting worse. The gear shift rattles. It will do it in all gears and neutral. It started intermidetly and is getting worse. I am thinking it sounds like whatever the shifter slides into is vibrating it. But i don't know a thing about trannys. Any ideas?
Thanks alot.
oh yea it comes off and rattles all the time but it's a more intense rattle from a more intense vibration. If i take of the chrome part and just feel the shaft I can feel the vibration come and go. So it's lower than the chrome part.
Before you go to the trouble of dropping the tranny for a look inside, you might jack it up, look for the triangular cover plate on the bottom of it directly beneath the shifter. Take the three bolts off and check to see if the nut that holds the spring and cups is tight. This may not be the problem, but if the nut is loose it would allow a lot of rattling around.

if the nut on the bottom of the shifter has come loose, you probably have a worn cup just above it. If the hole in that cup gets hogged out, nothing will keep that nut tight. Shifter repair kits are available
Greetings. I fixed similar problem by going under car and right about tranny where shifter starts to go in cabin of car, there was a aluminum circular piece that was loose. I just tightened it with my hand and problem solved.
