Re: Philadelphia, Saturday March 20
A beautiful Spring day welcomed a great turnout of some 30 enthusiasts from DC Fiats and Delaware Valley FLU.
We had our own tour of the museum, lead by the curator. The museum is dedicated almost exclusively to sports racing cars, with only the odd pure race car inserted to prove a point. Cars are grouped by heritage or race venue, accompanied by a suitable backdrop.
One of only 2 Corvette Grand Sports roadsters. This one was owned by Rodger Penske.
One of six Cobra coupes. Notice how the cars are not "restored". This example was featured on a Discovery TV show, and was rescued from a storage container, where it sat for twenty years.
Dr. Simeone is an Alfa Romeo fan, claiming that the marque is responsible for most of the groundbreaking advancements in sports-racing cars. Here's a portion of the Mille Miglia display.
Kids at a candy store! Some of group peers in on the restoration shop.
A portion of the NASCAR section. Hudson Hornets, this Superbird, and examples of the very first entrants.
One of only two 250 Speciales made (I think that's the correct model number), on loan from the Luigi Chinetti collection. Predating the McLaren by several decades as a three-seater with the driver in the middle.
D and C type Jaguars. These were restored.
A mouth-watering set of Italians in a LeMans setting, complete with fuel hoses
The 1958 Nurburgring winning Aston Martin, raced by Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham and Jimmy Clark
One of the many Alfas in the collection, the 1938 Mille Miglia winner.
Following the two-hour tour, we had a catered lunch upstairs, complete with a brief visit from Dr. Simeone, no longer practicing neurosurgery, but still a gearhead!
The museum is almost within walking distance from Philadelphia International Airport. If you have the chance to invent a layover, this is a great place to visit! Thanks to all who organized this event, and we hope to see you at our next outing!
