Oxygen sensor
I just got my first spider and was having a good poke around the engine bay and noticed that the oxygen sensor is unplugged. Is this accidental, or common for some reason?
Thanks,
Jim
Thanks,
Jim
Re: Oxygen sensor
common "solution" for owners that don't know how to diagnose FI trouble. Plug it back in

She's carburated, but I will plug it back in, once I've figured out where.

Re: Oxygen sensor
what year is your caR? was it originally carbureted? Or is that someone's conversion?
I'm no Fiat expert, but I'm having a hard time figuring-out what your carb'd car would be doing with the signal from an O2 sensor?
I'm about to install an o2 sensor in my carb'd car, but for a very specific purpose, and one that means I wouldn't need to plug-in the wire for any purpose other than when I'm tuning the motor.

Re: Oxygen sensor
Be careful leaving it unplugged, but installed if it's a heated o2 or wideband a/f sensor, it'll be ruined.

Re: Oxygen sensor
if you have a carb rather than FI, there shouldn't be any wire to plug it into. Just leave it.

Re: Oxygen sensor
rather than have us play 40 questions, it would be helpful if you post all of the pertinent info about the car and particular problem you're having

Sorry, I didn't intend for this to produce a 40 question quiz.So Cal Mark wrote:rather than have us play 40 questions, it would be helpful if you post all of the pertinent info about the car and particular problem you're having
I started out by saying I had just received my first Fiat and while digging around in the engine bay I discover what I believed to be the oxygen sensor unplugged.
My question then was....does anyone know of a reason for this or would it likely have been accidental?
I do not have the car registered yet, so it is not driveable...however when I picked her up from the shipper I had to drive her 1/2 hour or so home...and there were no signs of anything wrong.
The car is a 1985.5 Volumex.
Thanks again for all the feedback.
Cheers,
Jim

Jim:
all we were trying to convey was simply that you will be much, much happier with the accuracy and completeness of the responses you receive if we have ALL of the pertinent information; particularly that you have a (comparatively) rare car (Volumex) that will certainly have many systems and components which differ from the standard models.
You posted what seemed to be a complex conundrum; O2 sensor on a carb'd car. To tell us that it is carb'd, but not mention at that point that it is a Volumex is beyond incomplete, and borders on misleading.

However, at the time of my original post, I didn't know that fuel injected vs carburated was relevant.
My apologies, I will try to exercise better "keyboard annunciation" next time.

Re: Oxygen sensor
I wasn't trying to come too hard on you, but as stated previously, without all of the info misdiagnosis or poor advice will be the most likely outcome.

Man, you guys are cranky tonight! Jim, welcome to the forum. You have a very rare and desirable car. Certainly the most valuable of all the 124 Spider variants.
Please post some pix and tell us the story behind how you came to acquire your car. Did you ship it home from overseas? The Volumex was never officially sold here.

Re: Oxygen sensor
Look Jim,
We do demand pictures of every possible position of that engine bay. It is a rare sight to see a Volumex and I would appreciate some pics to see clearly what they did with that engine.
Cheers to you and welcome.
I am salivating in anticipation.
I certainly dont have the wiring plan for the 85.5's when they went back to carbed for the Volumex. I would replace the oxygen sensor with a new one once you find out where it plugs into.
