Where does this go?

Post by zachmac »

I have a balck piece of plastic that was in one of my footwell cubbies when I got the car and I kept but had no idea what it was for or where it went. I just saw one on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1978-Fia ... 1e58b0c27e) listed as a convertible top trim. Can anyone tell where / how this goes on the car?

That is a convertible top cover fastener. There is a left and right one. Dont you have a cover for the top when it is down? That black plastic fastens to the convertible top just behind the door. Look at the orange Spider at the top of the page, it has a tan conv. top cover.

Actually, IF the trunk is the boot, then the hood is the bonnet, and the drop top is the hood so these would part of the hood cover.

But this is NOT a British car and we are in the colonies where it IS indeed commonly referred to as a boot. The boot is BTW technically the term that applies to the area into which the top folds which in the case of the Spider is also the rear seat, making this the boot cover. You'll commonly see it referred to as a parade boot as well.

I do have one but only one of the ard pieces so maybe I should put the one on eBay on my watch list (once I verify it is the side i am missing). Thanks to all.

Mbouse,

BTW, if a Brit wants to "pinch your nipper" don't punch him out, he just wants to borrow a hammer. My dad raced Maseratis and Ferraris in the late 50s and early 60s and he swears that request, from a Jaguar mechanic to one of Jim Hall's (then racing 200SI Maseratis) Texan mechanics started quite a brawl in the pits at Elkhart lake.

funny story Jeff. i really appreciate it. Though, i'd have guessed that a nipper were pliers and not a hammer.

i owned a LBC long enough to claim authority in correcting "alternate" language usages. i am currently enjoying the current cable TV choice to include some re-runs of BBC broadcasts; can't remember the name of the show... but i listen hard for the UK names given to common tools/car parts. i generally get at least one laugh every episode. you asserted the correct authority in your definitions listed above. Good Show, old bean!

Yeah, when I was doing the British thing I learned a lot of terminology. Here is a link to a decent list: http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/brit-yank.htm BTW, as far as I know pliers are pliers on both sides of the pond. Not to be confused of course with a spanner. The hammer being a nipper most likely comes from the use of it to "nip" or bend over and secure sheet metal.

Here's another of my favorite lists: http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/classic_ ... icle14.htm Read some of them and you'll realize it is a fun list, not a serious list.
