3rd Annual So Cal Turkey Trot

Post by So Cal Mark »

Save the date, Sunday November 29th, for the 3rd Annual So Cal Turkey Trot. We'll meet at the Starbucks in La Verne, then make the run up Mt Baldy and over the Ridge Route. After you clear the house of visitors, polish off the leftovers and wrap up the early Christmas shopping save Sunday for a spirited drive in your Fiat. We've had great turnouts the past two years so make plans to join us. Times, locations and routes will be posted as the date approaches

And me, I gotta get the rear calipers rebuilt before then. The one on the passenger side is becoming a pretty bad leaker. But I'll get er done in time. This working away from home and the computer is cutting into my Fiat time!

I've got it down on my calendar. It's always been a good event -- the roads seem to be clear of traffic that day for some reason.

I bought some reman A1-Cardone calipers at Kragen and thought they were a great deal. I rejected the first one, because the bleeder was stripped, when one leaked, I took it apart and it looks like they bead blasted the bores and groove where the seal fits and put in some cheezy new pistons. The fit of the pistons to the bore was much looser than my old ones and the bores were rough. Total junk. I ended up returning them and rebuilding my old ones, which had much smoother bores.

I ended up rebuilding mine also. I've just heard too many horror stories about rebuilders. The deciding factor was when I took mine apart, it looked good, except the rubber, so I'm glad I decided to do it myself. Well, not completely by myself. Good ole Alvon was on the phone with me for a good deal of time when I got to the compressing the cupped washer/springs part. He sent me an Emai with pictures of the C clamp arrangement and it helped a lot. So now I've done a quicky repaint on the under side of the rear fender to patch the paint that got stripped by brake fluid flinging off the tire.
I'm ready for BFI, and the Turkey Trot!

I'll probably be able to make it. My Spider isn't all that nice, but I'm sure you guys won't turn up your nose at me. We should make sure that the road is open as Angeles Crest is closed indefinately from the fires. And yes, many times the creatures rebuilding the reman parts have a crack pipe in one hand and your brake caliper in the other. ImageImage

Just got my 78 Spider today. Got a few things to fix on her, and I've yet to name her, but I'd love to join in the ride.

Please post the times. Hopefully not too early in the morning!

Ciao.

we'll be meeting between 9-930am, first car out at 10am. Please arrive already fueled up! It's not a car show, so don't sweat it if your car isn't a trailer queen. This is a fun run along the Ridge Route from Mt Baldy to Azusa Canyon with some great views and lots of twisty bits.
Details and maps to the meeting spot in La Verne will be posted this week after verification that the roads are open.

The date is getting close! I ran the route today to make sure the roads are open. What a gorgeous day for a drive, clear and sunny! Weather predictions for next weekend are the same, perfect for a post Thanksgiving drive.

Meet at Starbucks in La Verne, 1181 Foothill Bl. Take the Foothill Bl exit from the 210 fwy and go east one block. Starbucks is on the left side of the street. Arrive 9am-930am, gassed up and ready for a fun run. First car out at 10am.

The run is up Mt Baldy Rd to the village, then up over the Ridge Route. The 2nd half of the drive will be slightly different this year, taking Glendora Mountain Rd and ending up in Glendora rather than Azusa. We'll end up in Glendora for lunch at IN-N-OUT on Lone Hill, very close to the 210 fwy for an easy drive home.

I'm so bummed I'm not going to have a car for this year's drive. Coming down the GMR, you'll end up practically driving right by my house. Someone will have to give me a call when you hit the bottom of the hill and I'll meet you at In-n-Out.

you could always ride with someone, sort of like the old navigators or ride-along mechanics
