Something does not look right.

Post by amsiegel »

I have not been feeling good for a few days and can not go play with my car. So I decided to check out craigslist to keep my self from getting bored. They say the car is a 1977.
Does something here look wrong?
Mines a 77 and I do not have that many hoses.
Is this the CA model with extra emission stuff?
Is the Nyquil messing with my brain?

The two hoses in front of the radiator are the fuel supply and return lines. You can see the fuel filter resting on the header panel and the facet fuel pump by the passenger's fender. Why anyone would do that is questionable since on all the model years the fuel hard lines run along the drivers side of the trans tunnel or along the driver's side rocker panel.

The other questionable hose is the large diameter hose that runs along the timing belt cover. My guess is it's the crankcase vapor hose.

Definitely a lot of wiring splices and hacks.

it looks like he wired in an electric fuel pump or something, that he tapped right on to the coil, hence the abundant amount of hosing and brilliant routing

Use another power source

May I suggest you find another source for the electric fuel pump. Using the coil may work when the car (& coil) is cold, but there is fair chance the coil will overheat and deprive the pump of power. The original pump may have been in the trunk near the fuel tank. If you locate the wiring there, troubleshoot it and get juice to that location.

The large hose may also be the crankcase breather hose. It originally tapped into the underside of the air filter housing. Look for a nipple. The air intake pulls vapors from the lower engine. This separates out gases that are harmful to the oil.

One important thing for a new owner to know: Because the crankcase breather hose serves a purpose do not cap off the crankcase breather hose. If the crankcase cannot breath pressure in your motor will build and gaskets can blow!

Great car and congratulations!

Speaking of "something does not look right" has anyone noticed how high the radiator sits. It looks as if the shroud is a little above the top of the radiator.

That's how the later cars came. For some reason, the rad cap and fan switched sides and the fan had to be mounted higher. I thought it looked like a goofy setup, so I added a aftermarket fan to replace it.
