Ok...I am now about to surgically remove the auto shifter. There are two red wires and two black wires that attach to the autoshifter. I guess one set will allow the car to start, (eg when shifter is any position other than park the car won't start) and the other set for reverse switch. Anyone been here before ? I have purchased a reverse switch that attaches behind the gear stick, so that when I select reverse the switch will be activated to turn on the reverse light.
If anyone can confirm I am close then I will sort out which set is which. Sooooooooooooooooo close......

You are close. I would use a continuity tester and apply it to the shifter assembly connections as you change from park to Drive and Reverse to see which is which.
The new transmission will have a reverse switch you can attach the reverse wires to so you needn't rig something else up.
The shift interlock switch could just be attached to each other so the starter can always be engaged or you could add a clutch switch to only allow the starter to engage when the clutch pedal is down.
