I've got a '78 Spider 1800.
While under my car to investigate the donut coupling and center support bearing, I noticed that the rear support for my transmission looked strange.
The rubber bushing seems to have melted into black goo. Aside from that, it seems to be mounted in such a way as to offer no support to the transmission. There are 2 sets of studs, and my bracket is mounted to the rearward set of studs. It seems like this setup would offer no support even if the rubber wasn't goo.
Should the bracket be mounted to the forward set of studs instead? Can someone check and tell me which theirs is mounted on?
Transmission Rear Support
the mount will disintegrate from oil leaking onto it. Those rear studs were for a crossmember that didn't support anything. I believe its' purpose was twofold; first to help stiffen the body, 2nd to act as a driveshaft loop should the flexjoint fail. It would prevent the shaft from falling to the ground
I don't mean further back in the driveline... The two sets of studs are within 2 inches of each other right near the rear of the trans. The front set of studs seems like it would offer support to the trans, but my bracket is mounted to the rear of the 2 sets, which seems to me like it puts the bracket just behind the trans. Thanks for the advice!!
