Timing Markings

Post by katsi »

Does anyone have a pic of the timing gage, 3 prong thing, that you time the motor to? I know it's a strange request but, I just got one and realized that I don't have a clue on how it's supposed to set in there.

Katsi,I know what you mean about those marks.I had a friend help me time the car with a battery powered timing light.I could not see the marks(aging eyes!) in the daylight,so I explained to him which mark to use.Well...to make along story short the car was a dog.Racydave checked it at DFF with a standard light and it was timed to the wrong mark! I was running +2 instead of+12 btdc which is what my car likes. What a difference.

Mike, that was not the item I was talking about but where do you get one of those? But, the item I'm talking about is a small little metal thing with a 3 pronged fork at one end. How does that fit in?

Katy eh? I'm in Katy too :D

I'm sure I can help you out with this. Which version of the car do you have? year model/engine size?

The 2 liters set their timing with a mark which is about at 10 o'clock from the crank if you look at it from the front on. The steel 3 pronged marker is bolted on with 2 m6 screws to the front crank seal cover. Normally at least one of these screws is headless from the factory though I do not understand for what reason.

The 1756 and 1608 engines use a timing mark on the cam belt cover.

To further complicate things there are 2 versions of the 1.8 liter motor.. which might have 2 different timing mark locations. At the very least the later style 1.8's can interchange crank pulleys with the 2 liters, only difference being the timing marks.

Can you provide a picture of the front of your engine?

I might be able to dig up one of my old timing marks somewhere and snap a picture for you but it could be a while before I can get to it.
