Hello,
Yesterday I went to see a 78 at a good price. It ran good and some minor surface rust. I looked at the shock towers and the top and bottom looked strong but the middle section had some noticeable rust. I was able to twist my key into the metal with a grinding sound while rust powder came out. No through holes but the top layers of the towers where bulging out. The under body and other rust prone parts looked good but concerned about those towers. The metal where the towers connect looks strong. The weld parts did not show signs of rust. Had a recent front suspension work done and driving it I could not feel any play or sounds.
Question: from the vague descripton that I am giving you, any thoughs on the condition of the towers? I see each one sells new for around $250 at AIP. How difficult, or is it worth it, to cut the old ones out and weld two new ones? Any experiences doing this?
Thanks.

Velozi, with out an actual picture to look at, and what you had described, I would have to say that the outer layer is just rusted thru but typically the inner layer is thicker. Water gets trapped between the two layers and rusts from the inside out. Others have successfully cut out the outer layer and welded in patch panels. I have personally replaced both of my shock towers and it is not fun!! They are not a direct fit. I also think that one of the parts vendors may have just this overlay piece, but I can't remember who. If you can post a photo we may be able to give you some better direction.
This is bad Rusted all the way thru, and up into the upper A-arm piviot.

I am having mine replaced. They are critical to the long term health of the car. I would estimate about $1500. to do the work with the parts. You need a shop that handles specialty work. Also you whould consider replace ball joints, bushings, and tie rode ends. I am replacing all the upper and lower A Arms (all parts installed already) as it cheaper than a rebuild.
Good luck

Thanks.
I posted a couple of photos of the front driver's tower. This is the worst side. I was unaware of the outer and inner layers. Looking at it closely, it looks more on the outside.
Give me your suggestions on how it looks.

Just keep in mind that metal panels rust from the inside out so you know the outer skin is trash. Here's the rot my 78 Lemons racer suffered. We welded patch panels to it but this car only needs to last 24 hours:
Here's what we cut out of it:
What you want to look for is a buckling in the fender area. This pic is upside down, but that long rail needs to be straight with no buckling:
After all of that, I'd still consider walking away from that car. The shock towers are such an integral part of the structure, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
