Registering in Hawaii
Registering in Hawaii
I'm planning on shipping my '72 124 Spider to Hawaii (Big Island) sometime in July / August. The car is in good shape and should have no problem passing safety inspection, but I run the dual 40 IDFs and I'm worried about having to deal with either smog or potential issues with a visual inspection. Any locals on the forum that have any advice on the inspection / registration process in Hawaii County?

Hey Mike, I've been around in the FIAT community for a while, but have been laying low the last 5 years or so. I also have a handful of pictures up on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/troymckaskle/sets/304891/ maybe you've seen it there on on one of the other FIAT sites.mbouse wrote:Hey, Troy. welcome to the site. I'm on the dry / leeward (kona) side of the Big Island and we don't get much rain, but we do get lots of sunshine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that rust won't be a problem.

well, we don't have emissions checks here so no worries about that, and about the carb, for the safety inspection, they dont even open the hood so there should be no problems as long as the car runs, and all blinkers and such work.

Aloha Troy,
Good thing you are on the Kona side vs. the Hilo side. More things to do, and 100X better weather. Like others have said, no emissions only annual safety checks. The last safety check I had they didn't even drive the car.
If you haven't picked a shipping agent yet, I would strongly suggest going with Pasha. I got mine shipped from San Diego very reasonably, and the car is driven on the boat instead of going in a container that could possibly fall off the side of the ship (it happens, 10,000 containers per year)
I'm on Oahu, but I frequently go to the Kona side of the Big Island for work. I actually have to go there this week, Wed. night through Friday.
Look me up when you get here, and If you need parts, I probably got them.
Boogiedude, let me know when those trans parts come in.

Right on - thanks Matt & boogiedude! Matt, I am planning on using Pasha. They are right down the road from me in Hayward, which is an easy drop, and they deliver into Hilo direct. The only way it could have been more perfect was if they delivered to Kawaihae. Should be fun driving the Saddle Road on the way back home, though!
