Roll bar on Spider??

Post by John Donohue »

Anyone know where I could find photos of a Spider with a roll bar installed - I have been toying with the idea, but would like to do some research first.

I got that one only because I want to mount my seatbelts in a similar fashion

i like that set up. but wouldnt it be better to mount the belt on the bar about 6 or 8 inches lower? thanx for the idea. ill copy it onto my bar.

I would think so.. the belt that high would be grazing my cheek.. not very safe.

My 1978 has a padded roll bar (previous owner installed) but the seat belts are mounted in the standard location.

I have also been considering installing a roll bar. I need to know how high they are. I have an aftermarket hardtop that I would like to use some times and am worried that it will not fit under the top. It is one of the old MG Mitten tops.

my old 75 had roll bar.. the converable top clear it with no issues.. EXCEPT for the rear bow over the window.. if I allowed that to flop forwards, it would catch on the bar and stop the top dead.

There is quite a bit less head room with my hard top in place than with the soft top. Me thinks there may be a problem with this idea. :?

well, from what I remember,, you could see over the top of the rollbar from behind with the top up.. I would guess there was four inches between the top of the bar and convertable top

If I ever get mine back together (big if,I know) I have half a mind to run it in Solo II events. In that case, the roll bar would be required. I still want to be able to use both tops. My hard top is very low inside, much lower than the soft top. I'll just have to do some measuring (and maybe some fabricating) when the time comes.

P.S. Who needs the back seat ? It didn't work for anything but the dog anyhow !

you don't NEED the roll bar.. but I can tell you this.. it does a great job of tightening up the body on the spider. When I installed the one in my 75, I had to realign the doors because it pulled the body straight from where it had slightly sagged over the years.

It's also nice to have.. "just in case"

Mine had a rollbar in it when I bought it and I promptly took it out and sold it. Now I wish I had the thing back! It helped keep the body from flexing and the paint cracking in certain areas. Mine was mounted in such a way that none of the interior panels were altered to accomodate it and the back seat was still available for people with no legs.
