How do you get the rear rotors off?
How do you get the rear rotors off?
I'm getting ready to sand blast the rear axle tomorrow. I just need to get the rear rotors off. Is it the little groove on the metal in the center of the rotor? I can't find the info in my book. If it is, is it counter clockwise to remove it. Don't tell me. Another special tool I have to make. LOL
Re: How do you get the rear rotors off?
Looks like the locating pins/bolts are off. Sometimes the discs rust themselves to the hub. Just get a hammer and gently tap them off.
Brady you are doing a great job taking that spider apart and media blasting everything. Gonna look sweet!

That was easy. A few taps and "WaLa!" I also took off the dust covers and then realized the axle would slide out. I put the bolts back on the axle so it would stay together and I wouldn't get media inside of it. Is there anything I should do to the axle since I have it apart? I only want to do this once. Did you see the rotors? I think they look pretty thick. Maybe even close to new. I don't have a caliper. I'm going to check on getting them turned. The front brakes look good also. I haven't taken the back apart yet.
Do they sell the Dust Covers in the wheels? I was able to save the back ones. The front ones were destroyed taking them apart.

Re: How do you get the rear rotors off?
i think i have a pair of used ones. if i do, they'll need some cleaning up.
Re: How do you get the rear rotors off?
If they are in good shape, I'm sand blasting and painting everything else. Let me know. Mine can be fixed but I don't think it's worth my time doing them. They broke around the bolt area.
Re: How do you get the rear rotors off?
the axles won't/can't just fall out. They are held in with retaining clips. If your axles merely slide out you need to fix that situation, otherwise they will come out while you are driving
Re: How do you get the rear rotors off?
Mark,
he has the newer rear end where the shaft is held in place with 4 bolts near the wheels. No retaining clips near the gear like earlier. the four holes on the dust cover are the same 4 bolts that hold the shaft on.

New rotors will be cheaper than having yours turned. Just a thought.

Re: How do you get the rear rotors off?
machining costs must be out of control in NC if it costs more to turn a rotor than replace it
Re: How do you get the rear rotors off?
wow really! I wish I new that. I wouldn't have wasted my time cleaning them up. I'll get a price and let you know how much it would be.
