Rear Muffler Replacement

Post by sjwcougs »

I badly need to replace my rear muffler. It is on it's last leg before it falls of on the interstate. Any recommendations? Should I just go with the OEM replacement?

I'm not in the market for Mark's complete exhaust system at this time. I wish I could, but cannot justify right now. It sounds as if the ANSA duel tips rot out in a couple of years. I would like a nice look and nice sporty sound. Advice?

Thanks!

you could just add a glass pack and put a dual tip on it and pocket the huge cash savings over an ANSA muff

i own one of those ANSA muffs, and have had it on my six month per year daily driver.

how about six years and still going strong?

depending on what you really want, your local muffler shop might be the right way for you to go.

ansa is notorious for rusting away. my buddy worked for them for 20 something years till they fired everyone a couple months ago.

I have had my Ansa system for 13 years and it is as good as new. Mind you, it doesn't often go out in the rain :)

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going have the all the stock pipe replaced from the header back to the muffler with 2 1/4" pipe, eliminating the resonator and the cat, and either go with the ANSA or one of the stainless mufflers that are on http://www.funimported.com/new_exhaust.htm I'm waiting for him to return my call or email. Does anybody have any info on these mufflers? I like the idea of stainless. There was also another muffler from flowmaster that is interesting. I think was a 60 series for small cars with 2.0l to 2.5l engines. If I go with the flowmaster I will definitely pick up one your twin tips from you spiderrey.

I want a nice sporty growl, but I don't want to have the annoying whine of a rice burner.

Thanks

That looks beautiful. It looks like a bit much for my stock engine. Would it be appropriate? What does your system look like? Where can they be purchased? How much? How big is the pipe going in?

thats the key, not getting it wet.
the inlet on this muffler is only 2 1/4.

Choices, choices! I was under the assumption that these mufflers typically rot from the inside out due to driving styles. Most of us use our cars for shorter trips and just for part of the year and water vapor builds up inside the muffler causing the rust due to the fact it never burns off. My car is never in the rain so maybe the ANSA would be a great choice.

Spiderey: Where did you get your muffler? Do you have any audio clips? Do you have any pics of your with this muffler. I would like to see them. Ho much?

It seems as if all the mufflers are about in the same price range at 250-300. The flowmaster 60 series I found is only about $130.

Does anybody have any feedback for me on my idea of replacing the stock pipe with 2 1'4" and removing resonators and the car? Does anybody think it's a good idea to keep the resonator. If I remove this stuff will it cause the engine to pop/backfire upon decel?

ask your intended muffler supplier about his comments on the popping on decel...

removing the resonator MAY cause that, but good luck finding a resonator pipe in the >2" size

If you haven't changed the intake flow, I would not recommend changing the exhaust system diameter. The larger the pipe, the slower the velocity.

On my modified 1800, I'm going with 2" pipe from the twin downpipes to the Flowmaster 60 alone. Sorry it's not running yet, but I should have data (and sound clip) before May 1.

that's why the stepper design of my header works so well. But remember, he's not changing the exhaust manifold or the head pipe and that's pretty restrictive

Can someone go through the thinking of what is needed in a muffler system from the ex. manifold to the rear of the car. What is an ideal pipe diameter and WHY. What are the included necessary mufflers or resonators, and how does each change the setup. My car is a F.I. car, does its needs change compared to a carb. What is too large or too small of a pipe.

Thanks
