Seat brackets?

Post by knohbody »

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum. Was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get the brackets that hold the top of the seat to the bottom off of the seat? The seat is already separated, but those brackets need to come off for me to reupholster the seat.

Hello, knohbody. Please be sure to stop up at the "introductions" page and let us all know who you are and what vehicle you are driving. kinda the way we like to do things around here.

are you using standard vinyl replacement upholstery kits? doesn't sound like it. are you reupholstering from scratch? not quite sure what your dilemma is.

Hey Mike,
No I'm gonna use the original vinyl as a pattern and change it up a bit. I'm trying to be as non-destructive as possible in case any of it can be salvaged. The vinyl on the seats isn't in bad condition.. maybe a tear or two here and there, but the headrests are horrible. At any rate, it'll probably be easier for you guys to figure out what I'm trying to do if i show you some pictures.

In the second image, I have all the visible screws out that are holding the bracket on. There was a cap where that hole is, and there's obviously some sort of screw or something in there, but the hole is offset to it, and I can't seem to get to it no matter which way I rotate the bracket.
This is a 78 124, btw. pictures in the new member/introduction forum.

hey, i did see the pics in the intro section... thanks. Looks like you have the basic "car in a basket"

i'm gettin old. i cannot remember how to separate those seats. i gotta defer to someone else.

now, the head rests are a different thing all together. getting the old vinyl off is one thing. removing the headrests is simply pull them up.

installing new vinyl on a head rest requires lots of steam from a steam cleaner, or upholstery steamer. Lots of steam, like until the vinyl is droopy soft.

Thanks Mike,
Headrests were giving me trouble too, apparently the posts had rusted them shut. I'm gonna keep working on that other bracket and see if I can get an angle that'll let me into that hole.

Hi,
I redid my seats, but I can't remember the details either. I vaguely remember that there are 3 fasterners, maybe 2, on each side that need to be removed, and one of them you can only get to when the back tilt adjustment is adjusted just right to line up the fastener with the hole in the plastic cover.

The headrests can't be pulled all the way out until you remove a clip that is inside the back panel. To remove the back panel you may need to remove some trip screws that may be holding it at the bottom, then just slip the panel out.

Sorry that I'm rusty on the details.

If I remember correctly, that plastic cover has to come off to gain access to the bolt securing the adjuster to the seat. I'll verify with the extra seats I have stored in the basement today.

On the top pic, you have four little indents on the round plastic knob. Put a tiny screwdriver in one of the indents and pry the plastic circle out of the knob. On my 80, the plastic knob was friction fit in, you will understand once the cover comes off. You will have access to the screws once the knob is off.

Ok everyone, i think i got it figured out. The knob has to be rotated the correct way to access the screws. Unfortunately, the screws are rusted shut, so i'm gonna let them soak in penetrating oil and go get some impact driver bits that are the proper size. Thanks for the help everyone!
