Polishing Cam Covers

Post by Hutch »

One down, one to go.

Part of the extras that came with the 77 I just bought included a second set of cam covers. I never realized just how much work is involved in polishing aluminum from such a rough state.

Has anyone got any tips on what to coat the cam covers with to 'protect that shine' and stand up to the heat !

Thanks

Why thank you. :)

Just about everything I could find
Actually I did a lot of experimenting with sandpapers from 60-600 using a Black and Decker Mouse sander, some 0000 steel wool, and then 2 polishing "buffs" on a drill with brown and then white "rouge" (I think that's how it's spelled).

I got my inspiration from this site: http://www.poleringsguide.se/english/

I don't have all of the stuff I need, nor the talent or patience to live up to this guy yet though.

It does take a lot of patience, doesn't it? I did mine the hard way like you, but when it came time to polish my intake and air horns, I took the pieces to a company that does aluminum polishing. Too many nooks and crannies for my patience!

Mark, I've never heard of Zoop. Is it available at local auto parts stores?

not too sure about local parts stores, but speed shops or perf retailers definitely. I'm sure Summit carries it. It's pricey but is guaranteed to last for years

Finally got the second one done. I would love to see how a professional shop would do this. I bet they could do each one in a matter of minutes. Oh well, it was kind of therapeutic. I guess you could make them chrome-like if you wanted to (and was able) but I kind of like this look. It's a good thing too as this is as good as they're going to get :)

"As good as they're going to get" is pretty damn good in my opinion!

Hutch, you should start a service for this. I'd gladly pay at least 14.95 per cover (plus shipping, of course).

a professional polish job would cost about $40 per cover and they would look like chrome
