Where are all these Years Of Spiders

Goodmorning all Spider lovers ,,,,I have Noticed a shortage of some years of spiders for sale ,,or even owned for that matter, It may just be timing but when looking through Craigs Lists for Spiders for sale I notice that hardly do I see 1971,,1973,,1975 Spiders for sale . Is there a reason for this like a shortage of these years or is it that maybe I am not looking in the right places? LD

Well, this is the way I see it. I'm sure SOME people may chime in: The 71 and 73s are chrome bumper cars and are very desirable. People just don't want to let go of a good thing.

Also, for the most part, the earlier years were made the least and the number of cars built per year increased as the year increased

Edit: also if you are from CA, everything under 75 is desirable because of smog...

Bet you are right ,, I called a guy on a 72 and he wants $900 ,,it has rust ..right now with out all the complete knowlege of how rare some of these year of cars are,,I am looking at 73's to find..any thoughts on this year knowing it might have the 5 mile per hour bumper on it ? LD

The year of 75 is catching on in all states I believe for the last year to not need smog testing on.. how about 1985 Spiders ? I read some where that there are only 250 made ,,is this correct number? LD

There is a member up in Washington, Darsie, who had an anniversary edition and was compiling a list of known survivors. She now has an 85-1/2 and if I'm not mistaken is doing the same with this model, which was the last produced. Hopefully, she will chime in. She may well be the voice of authority on this question.

Spiders up as for history and I found this ..I "guess it's accurate" it does tell how many of them were when made ..and that alone speaks for why some years are unavailable to find now years later. Check out the low number for 82's LD

A 73 won't have the big bumpers. The changes for that year consist of a small bump hood and 1592 cc engine (less hp than 1608). Also the taillamps were changed to the size that fit the 70, 73-78. Of course, some early 73's had the 1608 engine.

Papa, I think your list of cars made in each year, should read imported to the US. Certainly, more than 242 cars were built in '85, most were destined for the European market. It's interesting that it shows the final date as 11/85 when in fact the last car built was during 7/85 - another pointer towards import. My car was first registered 5th July '85 - not quite the last.

taillights changed back in 72. 71 was the oddball year along with a few 72,s.

I'm honored to know you guys actually respect what a girl has to say I sold the LE, and now have a black 1985 1/2 that we just finished. I'll post pictures or a link to the painful restoration. Let me give you all of the info, so you'll know how I got to the answers.

It all started because there was a lot of different information floating out there regarding the Pininfarinas and 1985 vs. the 1985 1/2 spiders. Even the documentation I have from Pininfarina is not correct as there were many late custom order cars. So I got curious and decided to start saving info as well as a detailed vin list. I took all of the 1985 years (including volumex) off the german registry, info from Vicks (they had a list of the one's they parted out or owned) as well as saved Ebay listings dated back to 2004 from another member of my club (also a nerd). I record the color combo, condition, sale price, build date, location or any other observations. Here are my findings thus far:

They started the VIN#'s at 5510001 in September of '84 for the unique 85 1/2 cars, anything with a 550XXX is a regular '85 (which is the same as an '84 model)

The last VIN# is believed to be 5511940. Vin # 5511935 was for sale on Ebay in 2005 which is the highest that I have recorded.

That means there were 1,940 produced.

BUT, here's the what's interesting - that INCLUDES some Volumex and Spidereuropas. Yes, I have 551XXX vin numbers recorded for all three models.

So how many did they make of the USA models?

Not sure, but it is said that it was 186 or 242. Nobody really knows. Some didn't make it on the 186 order, other's were custom ordered by Military or other US citizens living in Italy (mine is one of those and I have the documentation to prove it). I got some interesting info on how they ordered it- you had to specify for it to be a USA model, but it still came without the cat.

It looks like there are a lot floating around but that's not the case. It's the very same VIN numbers that keep popping up on Ebay. Some are sold, then re-sold and then pop up in another state for sale again. So while it may seem like there is a lot of them, it's actually quite a few of just the same cars. There have even been a few regular 1985's on Craigslist (using the CL MASH search engine), but I'm mostly trying to keep track of the later cars. It is my favorite car of all time, and hopefully I can help make people aware of how rare they are and NOT to part them out in order to put the rack & pinion on your '79 (which was the year they made the most of)!!

So while I know my list is not complete or 100% accurate, I feel like I have a good start on some actual hard data. As of today, there are only 27 cars on my list of USA 1985 1/2 models in the USA remaining and only a few are in very good condition. Mine is the only black/black remaining out of the 3 black cars I have listed. I only knew of one other one, which was sadly parted out this year. All of the other models are red, rosso-met & azzurra.

So the highest VIN# I have recorded is 5511935, built on 7/85. There were only 5 cars after that. I have not seen any proof of any cars built after 7/85. In fact, they would be "technically" 1986 cars, and we know that Pininfarina did not sell or produce any 1986 models.

The total number of USA Pininfarina Spiders (all years) built is 2,758. They made around 9,000 cars total. It does not match what you read on web sites so who knows which is correct.

I have a letter from Pininfarina stating it (that another enthusiast faxed me).

I like as much history as I can get on where my older cars and trucks came from and You just made my day .. I know where my 82 came from and have the bill of laden also ..Of, course ,,like others when I seen the amount of 85 1/2 that were shipped here ,,I knew I wanted one and even though from your findings they are all "maybe owned /or parted out" one can keep their eyes and ears open and still find one in some ones back yard under a tree or in grandmas garage just sitting there a waiting for one of us to bring it back to life . thanks again LD from Oregon
