No power going to fuel pump/courtesy light/gauges

Post by PeterK13 »

Hey there. I have a 1979 fiat spider/carb/electric fuel pump. This is what happened. The car was starting with no problem. I would turn the key, the fuel pump would engage(in trunk), the gauges would move and show fuel etc, radio would go on, and the courtesy lamp would also light up. the car would start. SO, I had an AC unit was not working/never used and looked like crap. So i took out. Along with all its wiring/relays etc. Note I had one Red/Black wire going into the AC wiring from one of the wiring harnesses which I ended up cutting off. I also took the metal plate with relays under the glove comparment out, painted it, cleaned all contacts to relays and put back in the car.
Now, car will crank,(after I cleaned up all the contacts). Will not start. All fuses look to be ok. The dome/courtesy light no longer functions. the gauges do not move when ignition is in the ON position. The fuel pump now does not function. Fuel pump would start pumping as soon as the key was in the "on" position. No power is going to the fuel pump. no power is going to the solenoid. Power is going to the head lights and power is going to the radio.
More parts of the puzzle. I also took out dash and had the goal to replace the black trim around the gauges with the chrome ones. While doing this I also replaced the lamps with LED.

(This lighting seems to be working ok except none of the large chrome bezels are the right size(purchased three sets, all wrong size)(need help on which one to buy on this as well) thanks [/b]
Also, I replaced the relay for the flashers and all seemed to be working ok. But then now the Flashers no longer flash, nor do the turn signals function . (not sure if related or other issue).
I am hoping I did something stupid and accidentally pulled a wire out by mistake.
Where should I look to find out what I messed up. Guessing the light/fuel pump and solenoid on same circuit. Hoping at least. Thank you in advance for any advise.

Just saw your post. Have you fixed any of you problems? I might be able to help you if you are still having problems. Sounds to me like you might have more than one problem and not a single issue. I would suggest trying to fix one circuit at a time. Do you have a trouble light or volt meter?

Thank you. I have a circuit tester and also a Multimeter. I know enough to be dangerous when it comes to electric stuff. Thank you in advance to any suggestions you have for me.

First I would troubleshoot the no Start issue.
First measure the voltage at the cars battery with the ignition key in the "off" position. The again with the key in the "run" position then a third time with the key in the "start" position. All three tests should be more than 10.5 volts.
I believe the pink wire on the ignition coil needs to have more than 10 volts with the ignition switch in either the "start" or in the "run" positions of the ignition switch. When I say either i could also say both positions. This is easiest done with one person turning the key and the another person looking at the volt meter.
Let me know how these tests measure.
