Inside Dimensions of a Hard Top

Post by vwdmc16 »

Im building a Roll Bar, possibly make it a full cage for my track car 124. So i want to run a hard top eventually and make an Abarth replica but with a proper roll bar, i build race car cages everyday for a living but i need to know how much room i have. i still have the soft top so if anyone with a hard top can compare it to the factory soft top id really appreciate it.
if all else fails, im going to make my own hardtop that looks period correct but fits my 6'4" frame better

Where do you want the measurements taken from? From the rear floorboard up or back seat area?

well since the interior is a complex shape. i gues the basic dimensions will be all i can use. id like the overall inside height at the center of the car, on the tunnel, and maybe height from the floor 6" from center, 8" out, 12" ,etc. and also the shoulder width at various heights above the door

i know its alot of trouble but its all i can go by untill i can get a real top.

There are different hardtops. I have a smoothline on my 70 that I can measure and I can measure my 72 with a soft top at the same points. With this track car, are you supposed to have 2" helmet clearance from the windshield frame to the rollbar? Since I'm only 5' tall that's not an issue for me but you may run into problems.

My head is much closer to the hardtop, and Im 5'10. With a helmet I would hit it! Youll need to sit on the floor in a special seat.

ive installed miata seats which are lower, also i will probably put a gurney bump in the roof, we had to on one of my company's Spec miatas which 6'4'' drivers like me use. so i may need to add an inch or more to the hardtop, keeping it custom
