New tie rod sleeves neccesary?

Post by nicktheviking »

I'm planning on a steering overhaul.

New steering center link & tie rod ends. I was wondering if I should bother ordering new tie rod sleeves or just re-use my old ones. They're just metal pipes with threaded ends, yeah?

If they're not rusted too bad, just clean up the old ones, paint to make them look purty to match the rest of your good work, and reuse them. That's all I did, as you can barely see in this picture.

so often, the old ones have been crushed in the middle by some one adjusting toe-in without the proper tools. New sleeves are SO NICE to work with that IMHO they are worth the cost

My old ones were in pretty good shape, so I reused them when I changed my tie rods and center link.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll probably take them off to inspect them before I make a decision. Should I invest in new sleeve clamps as well?

Nick, I did mine last year and was able to buy the complete tie rod aasy. Since these do not fail that often, I would think the extra few bucks to replace the ends and sleeves and clamps would be advantageous. I think I got mine from Bruces for about $30 an assy.

Again, just an idea toward saving some time in taking apart and putting back together. Fewer delays from the old god of oops shoiuld have done that from the beginning.

Those used or new? Cuz $30 for one side tie rods, sleeves and clamps is a fantastic price.
