Lurking No Longer

Post by uncahoo »

Hi, and thanks to everyone for being here!
I've been infrequently lurking on the forum since 2013, as the need arises. Now I plan to change the timing belt in the spring, and your information on how to do it is invaluable.
About me: My first car was a used 1965 Simca 1000, a four-door sedan imported by Chrysler. That's a rear-engined design similar to a Fiat 850. That French-built car was a collaboration between Simca & Fiat. My first brand new car was a 1971 Fiat 850 Spider that I autocrossed for 5 years with my wife. My current car is a 1974 Fiat 124 Sport Spider 1800 that my father bought new. It's in original condition and just turned 55,000 miles. So, according to the wise people on this forum, it's long overdue for a new timing belt and I've been lucky. Thanks everybody for all your help!

Welcome, and yes, I would definitely change that timing belt. There's plenty of guides/tips on this forum, and just let us know if you have questions. A belt change on a '74 shouldn't be too bad because it didn't have all the timing belt rear covers that the later cars had.

Good Morning Bryan! Thanks for the tip about the rear cover. I saw mention of that in some posts and wondered about it. Thanks again and Happy New Year!!!

Hi and welcome!
first of all: A happy New Year!

Your Spider is a One family car, thats something really rare! We are always interested in some pics of new (active) members!

I also would like to add the car to the Spider Register. Can we get the VIN and some more details about it?

Cheers Ralf

Hi Ralf!
Thanks for the registry information; I’ll do that. But it might be awhile before I can lift the car’s cover to look at the numbers. I’ve fell down a couple of days ago and broke a rib in my back. I can barely move; not a good way to start the new year. And I’ll find some photos too. Thanks again!
