Metal on metal scrapping sound?

Post by Zoofly »

I'm getting a scrapping sound that sounds like metal on metal. I used to get this faint sound on start up but would go away when depressing the clutch. Now the sound is constant, but seems to be coming from the timing belt area. When I rev the engine, the scrapping sound matches the rpm. I have two short videos, one from the engine bay and one from the inside of the car. I'm curious as to what you think it is. I'm not too far from Allison's Automotive so worst case scenario would be to drive it out to him to trace it down.

Could be the clutch disc against the flywheel, or possibly the inner metal cover of the timing belt cover (although I don't really know what that means). Been reading old posts but not finding anything definitive.

In that area I would suspect something rubbing on the tin shields behind the belt cover. Could also be a failing water pump, tensioner or alternator bearing. Any play in the water pump or alternator pulleys?

Get a mechanic's stethoscope (they are cheap - I think I got mine at Harbor Freight, or you can make one with some tubing and a metal rod). They are good for trying to track down things that go bump (or scrape) in the night (or day). Be very careful, however, where you put the thing when engine is running!!!!.

I vote for alternator brg. Remove the belt and check alt brg by hand like Dave says. You can start and run the engine for a few sec w/o the alternator and water pump to see if the noise goes away.
