removing radio console wood panel?

Hi everyone,
I'm doing some interior work and installing a new radio on my new-to-me 1981 Fiat 2000. The lower center console is MIA (cracked to pieces when I was removing it, the vinyl was egg-shell brittle) and I will be getting a new hard-plastic repo at some point, but I am planning on capping the radio (upper) console with a cap from AR. I'll spray it with the beige plastic paint they sell.
It looks like I will have to remove the chrome-surrounded wood panel on the radio console to install the cap. How do I remove it? I was getting ready to try to pry it off with some plastic auto trim tools, but I'm worried about cracking the wood.
I'm brand new to these cars and will greatly appreciate any advice...
