Metal Fuel lines leaking

Post by davefrancisco »

Pulled the carpets out of the drivers side and noticed a small amount of fuel where the line rises from floor and heads to firewall. Must be a very small hole because its not spurting fuel. Also evidence of rust on both of the lines. I think the issue is with the return line and that's why the amount of fuel is so small.

So looking to see where I can find new lines, or if someone has an idea for a repair. And if anyone has the spec's on the line, ID & and OD that would be great. I may try and make them myself. Thinking a bubble flair is needed where the metal meets the rubber lines.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Is there a chance that the line is leaking further up the firewall, like where the metal line eventually connects to rubber tubing, and the fuel leaked from that point just dribbles down underneath the metal line until it pools up at the lowest point where you saw it?

The rubber hoses that connect the metal lines to the carb do eventually start leaking, and fuel just weeps out and dribbles down to the lowest point where it forms a drip. Same with the rubber hoses that connect in the rear to the gas tank.

I don't recall the exact size (it's probably in millimeters), but the fuel inlet to the carb takes a larger rubber hose than the fuel return back to the tank. As I recall, 5/16" for the fuel inlet hose and 1/4" for the return. The metal lines would be sized for those hose sizes.

You could probably make a new metal fuel line, and as long as you were close in size to the original, the rubber hoses should fit fine. A flare on the ends would be nice, and it's just to prevent the hose from sliding off, so pretty much any flare would do.

My uncle is suspecting a fuel return line leak on his '76. We will double check the size when we take a closer look tomorrow. Got to finish installing the suspension from 4Wheelonline onto the truck tomorrow before we can clear the garage.

A bit delayed wrap up here. The metal lines were in fact the culprit. Moving on to the rusty bits now that the fuel lines are out of the way.

Stay tuned for more questions..

Thanks as always for the help..
