Hey guys, found a decent price on a pair of 44 idf from a vw. I am thinking to try fitting them onto my 79 spider. I know the linkage will need to be changed, question is being close together, will they fit on the spider intake (got one on the way) and are they suited to a 2l spider or should I keep looking for 40 idf?
Thanks
Greg

Re: Weber 44 idf
I have 44IDFs in my -78. It runs awesome but was far from an easy conversion.
What other mods are you planning? The IDFs are cool but should be considered the last upgrade after header, higher CR, cams, etc. The 44IDFs are good for 180+HP and not a good choice for a stock -79 with 8:1 CR.
I hear the original 44IDFs for Fiat are a different casting from the current VW 44IDFs available. The VW ones are wider. I had hard time fitting the VW 44IDFs on a manifold. Had to trim the ends of throttle shafts and fabricate a custom carb linkage.
I did all the work myself. Countless hours, which I mostly enjoyed. I could never afford to hire this work out, would cost way too much.
What manifold do you have coming? All the ones I know are for 40mm carbs.

Re: Weber 44 idf
That's cool that you made them work. I have a manifold for 40's on the way. I am thinking to do a full rebuild, but not for the time being. I would prob just change the cams and carbs for now, but I may be better waiting til i have the time and money to do it all. I will be doing it myself. For now I should prob just finish the x19 motor that I have apart, and improve a few other things on the spider.
Thanks for the reply.
