New Electronic Ignition Bogs at 5000rpm
We took out the old duel points system, and all the emissions gear. installed a new electronic ignition system--distributor, coil, and control module. Carb has already been gone through and was working fine with the duel points. With the new system in, when carb hits the 2nd barrel, it bogs down at about 5000rpm. played a while with it. then last resort, put the old duel points system back in---revved up as far as we wanted to go, so the old system is back in the car now. We're figuring it could be a bad distributor or vacuum from the manufacturer?

I have seen a new distributor have interference between the pick up and the distributor cap. This stops the vacuum advance from working by locking the advance plate to the cap. I used a Dremel tool to grind the cap for clearance and that seemed to correct issue.

My first thought would be a fuel delivery problem. Did the old dizzy accelerate well, WOT, beyond 5000? Not talking about revving while parked, but on the road, accelerating WOT. Just trying to rule out fuel delivery, which is a common problem when seeking improved performance.
Interestingly, I have been troubleshooting a somewhat similar sounding problem. My car recently stopped pulling above 4000rpm. Replaced coil, ICM with no improvement. Then suddenly, runs OK for a week. Now acting up again. Inspected dizzy cap. It does have a faint crack from #4 to rim.
Have you done a static timing check at 5000rpm in the garage? Should be about 36-38 with vac advance disconnected.
Did the engine feel right, pull strong until the problem at 5000? Or sluggish all around?
