small misfire fix ends up with the car not running

Post by jskinner96 »

I've had this car for a couple of months now and thanks to this forum I had it running great until today. I had a very small misfire I thought I would try to fix. The car had a bad tank on it when I got it so I was dealing with a lot of rust. The tank is good now but I had a feeling the #1 injector was clogged so I took it out and cleaned it and put it back in. Same small misfire. I also had it on my list to continue to clean all the grounds and terminals so I went ahead and disconnected the wires on the ignition coil and sanded them clean and reconnected everything. I always try to look through the forum since it seems that 99.9999% of the members have already had the issue that I'm having. So I did some reading and ran across a post about the AFM sensor and how you can bend the two posts a bit if they're rubbing the disc too much. So I checked mine and sure enough it looked pretty worn in the lower RPM range where I seem to be getting that small misfire. I tried that and when I tried to start the car it just sputtered and kicked and died. Tried it time after time and it keeps doing the same thing. Sometimes it will run for 30 seconds but it's real rough and if I try to give it gas to keep it going it dies. I've read on here more than once to go back to the last thing you did. So I checked that AFM sensor about 20 times making sure I didn't mess anything up there and it seems okay. I can leave the ignition on and move it and hear the fuel pump working. However, once when the car was sputtering I got out and went to the sensor and moved the dial and it didn't do anything or eventually made it die. I thought before when I moved that it revved the engine. So then I went back to the coil to make sure I didn't mess anything up there and it's all good. I worked on it for hours today and couldn't seem to figure out what I messed up but I keep going back to that sensor since the other couple of things I did seem to be solid. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Leak between the AFM and the throttle plate?
Do you have good fuel pressure?
Scrap injectors?
Connector or the sensor in the T coolant?
Bad pickup coil or adjustement?
Spark plug wire mismatched?

I completely left out one thing that I did and I'm not sure if some kind of air pocket could cause this but I the throttle body heater is completely rusted so I thought I would take it off and see if I could clean it up. When I took that fourth nut off the radiator fluid started flowing out so I immediately pushed it back down and bolted it back down to mess with on another day. Not sure if that could have messed something up. But like I said, prior to these things I did today it was running almost perfectly yesterday and for the last few weeks.
