drain plugs replacements - have to be pipe?

Post by Emersonfiat1977 »

Can i uses a standard metric drain plug or do they have to be pipe threaded?

I appreciate the help once again
You guys are the best.

Have read the other post and was confused by this.

Do you think pipe threaded plugs should be best way for future replacements on engine and transmission plugs?

I have broke housing in the past using pipe threaded temperature sensors.

Aren't the Fiat oil pan, transmission, and differential plugs all pipe threads? Otherwise, you could keep screwing them in and they would just fall through to the other side.

Some cars do have straight threads but then use a flange on the bolt head and a gasket to provide the seal. My '69 Chevy does this. On non-automotive uses, sometimes you'll see thread sealant used. That's why some iron pipes in your house might have thread sealant, whereas copper pipe threads might not need that as copper is a softer metal and the threads "mold" themselves against each other to provide a seal. I'd be wary of using thread sealant on a car drain plug, as some of it could wind up in the oil and do bad things.

If you want to replace your Fiat drain plugs, then yes, I would imagine any metric drain plug with the appropriate sized pipe threads would work. If you want to be sure, you could just order the drain plugs from one of the typical Fiat parts suppliers.
