computer data question
ok here goes. i have a sony vaio computer. it got a virus or something. it has a system restore mode which works great. it made the computer function properly again. but, i lost all my kodak pics in my kodak picture file. i would really like to get these back, there were about 400 good pics in there. i know there is a way to retrieve them, does anyone know how or have any ideas?

System restore reformats/erases your drive and writes the new data over it. The data is most likely lost permanently. There is software that can recover almost anything (used by Police, FBI, CIA, government, etc.) I have no idea where you could get the same software though.

Data Recovery
Usually when you restore the CD rewrites the system files and removes your "index" but the files are still out in the free and slack space. try going to http://www.runtime.org

Your pictures should still be OK
Sounds like you used the System Restore feature in your computers operating system, and not a reformat of the hard-drive (which would have involved digging out all of those CD-ROMs you get when you buy a new computer).
If you have re-formatted (CD-ROMs), it will take a trip to the nearest "Uber-Geek" to get stuff back. When you get to his/her shop, you should stretch/warm-up in the parking lot because you'll be bending over once you get inside!!!
At any rate, the System Restore function is reversible. I'm assuming you are running "Windows XP" (if not, let me know and I'll try to help).
If so, there should be an "Undo" option available...just launch the system restore application again, and "Undo" should appear as an additional option on the 1st page of the "System Restore Wizard". Say a quick prayer to the diety of your choice, and click it...remember to breathe!!!
Oh, for anyone following this...to start the System Restore tool (Windows XP Users):
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
Anyhow, when the System Restore wizard launches, you should have a 3rd option now...Undo! Just follow the wizard, and all should be well again. Actually, you'll get everything back...including the problems that lead you to perform the "Restore" in the first place. So get your pics out, then decide what to do about the "virus" issues...
It's a good idea to look at the features of the System Restore tool. There are settings to schedule the automatic creation of restore points, as well as the good-ole Manual Method. It's a good idea to create a "Restore Point" once you have your computer set-up the way you like it, especially if you have installed a lot of software, archived lots of pics, etc...
