Timing notches and distributor questions.

1979 Spider 2000. Is there a special wrench made specifically to loosen and tighten the distributor hold down nut? Is the pulley supposed to have two timing notches cut into it because mine does. If so, which one is used for timing purposes? What should the timing be on this car? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use a 17mm crow's foot, I've found it works the best with the limited room.
Are you asking about the crank pulley notch? The pulley usually has one notch. It's possible someone found true tdc and discovered the pulley was off, so they added a notch. The only way to find out is to find tdc on the motor and check the pulley alignment.

You could line up the two cam marks and see which crank notch lines up with the timing mark. Are the notches close together?

I usually set the initial timing at 10 btdc.

Hi Mark - thanks for the info on the crow's foot. My car is original from California but all the emission stuff was removed, including the air pump. In Ontario Canada, cars over certain years do not have to pass emission standards. There are a lot of plugged hoses and vacuum lines on my car but it runs perfectly so I'm not going to mess with it. The notches I'm speaking about are on the outside of the small pulley, the side that used to drive the air pump and not on the larger pulley which is the one that drives the alternator and waterpump. These notches are about one inch apart and look to have been factory made. I could not find a notch on the bigger pulley which is where I thought it should have been. If I have to, I will check the cam marks but I'd rather not right now as the list of todo things is stedily growing.

the timing notch on a 2L should be on the 2nd lip back, the larger groove

Thanks Mark - It's as I thought. I guess I will just have to take a better look to find that mark on the bigger pulley..

Hi Karim - I think there are a few people from TO but they just don't post. I'm actually amazed at just how many spiders I've seen running around the city. Living not far from "Little Italy" and Woodbridge explains the abundance of spiders.
