Windshield crack ... twice?!?

Post by braca23 »

Hello guys,

I just wanted to check if anyone else had same issue as I have. I have a little bit strange situation, that two windshields cracked on my Spider in one year period. The first one was original, and old as a car, but a new one is fresh "Pilkington Glass".
For the first one I am not sure if anything hited it, because I have found my car with exploded windshild in garage, after few days.
As far as second windshield is concernd, I am pretty sure that little stone punched it while I was on the open road.
Maybe it is just a bad luck, but I have allready purchased another one. I just wanted to ask, is there any tricks, I should know for? I am thinking, my car is completly restored recently. Maybe something in chassis is moved, which maks windshield under pressure, all the time? Is something like that possible?

Sorry for the long text.
Cheers to everyone!

Sad situation :(
Did you replace the gasket each time or do you reuse the old one ?

Yes, I replaced it when I instaled new windshield. It is new (not perfect, in the upper corners it doesnt fit perfect, but it should be soft enough).

Is there a heater in the garage that is blowing across the windshield? Sometime a concentrated source of heat even from a skylight can cause the glass to explode if heated unevenly or too quickly even if there is not any chip in the glass.

Also be sure that nowhere does any metal poke through the gasket and touch the glass. We had one frightfully expensive custom arched window in a home keep doing similar and it was because someone had put a screw into the frame from below which had an almost invisible razor sharp tip on it that nobody noticed until on of us got slashed by it and started bleeding. We ground the point down flush with the channel and the window has not failed since.
