starter motors

Post by pottsthomas »

I'm the original owner of my 79 spider. About 5 years ago had an issue with the starter occasionally not engaging. solenoid seemed to be working but not enough juice to turn motor over, even with a fresh charge. As I recalled, we replaced the starter along with some other work. Recently, same problem recurs with the new starter. Actually, the starter was spinning freely, unengaged for about a minute after the car sat for a year during the 1st restart. Since then, occasionally won't engage. Try it 6-7 times- then it does. Does this sound like a connection problem, a dead spot, or something else.

it sounds like low voltage to the starter. could be a voltage drop at a connection or a weak battery

You should probably clean up the connections, inspect the connector for the ignition switch also. The engine to body groundstrap is a weak link, I have added another. All of these fixed mine!
