1978 stock exhaust man/downpipe

Post by wagonmaster74 »

I have a 1978 124 Spider - that's why I am here. The car has a stock exhaust manifold, a clamp looking device and a pipe that starts the exhaust downward and rearward. Big leak there. Is there supposed to be a doughnut? I can't find evidence of it. If so, where do I secure one? Help and thank you!

Just to be sure I understand, the leak is where the clamp connects the exhaust manifold to the downpipe? No, I don't recall there being a donut there, as the two metal pipes are shaped to form their own donut (one sorta male and one sorta female).

If you have a leak there, it is because these two halves are either not fitting properly into each other, and that could be because they are misaligned or bent. Try loosening the clamp, moving the downpipe around to get them to fit together better, and then tightening the clamp. If you can't move the downpipe very much, you might have to loosen it underneath the car at the rear. And any clamps that secure it. Then try reconnecting the manifold and pipe with the clamp and see if that helps.
