Post by ctrick »

Hi all:

I have an 83 spider. Here in MO they require a front: license plate. Any ideas how to mount one? Chris ?: :?:

Same issue in WA. Mine is screwed directl into the rubber pad on the bumper with a couple of 1" lag screws. Works well. Been that way for 8 years now.

I got this universal holder from Autozone, it has a bunch of slots in it to mount just about anywhere. There are two little holes in the left front bumper pad to screw into.

a couple of zip ties work just fine. easy peasy... cheap and neat. no holes, no muss no fuss.

can some one explain to me the technical/psycological/practical advantages to having a front plate? sure is a lotta waste of resources.

if you mount it to the front valance with the upper bolts, then bend it fwd at the bottom it doubles as a mini spoiler

It's a sticky topic in my neighboring , home Province of New Brunswick. They require a front plate in half of Canada's provinces and territories...http://www.worldlicenseplates.com/world/CN_XLPR.html However, there are numerous petitions to have front plates removed in many Provinces, sighting the cost. practically and aesthetics.

Luckily Sophia can run around freely without a front plate.. w/o a front bumper I'd have nowhere to put one anyway! Although a euro plate would look good on the front spoiler. I was thinking something along the line of "X08 T1H2".

Ohio also requires a front plate. I don't have one on my Spider or my BMW. Have never been stopped. Could be because I am running a historical plate. But they sent me a front plate with the historical registration, so it probably is still required. I guess it comes down to how viligently your state enforces the front plate requirement. Maybe I'll get pulled over eventually, but I have no intention of installing a front plate unless I am forced to.

I store my front plate in the spare tire well, in case I ever get stopped. The line will be, "officer, I'm trying to locate a front bracket for this car, and will mount this tag as soon as I find one." I've had local and state police positively comment on the car while parked at stores, etc., and none of them have even mentioned the lack of a (historical) front tag.

we incredulously have far to many laws on the books for any enforcement officer to stay on top of..then we all know that these guys will purposely selectively enforce some laws and not others.

so, does anyone know WHY two plates (front and rear) came into favor to begin with?

In our overly paternalistic police state Down Under, 2 plates are mandatory and strictly enforced because of the millions of dollars in revenue raised by fixed, mobile and temporary speed cameras which use the plates to identify the poor sucker whose turn it is to donate to the State Government coffers. The speed cameras have been shown to be innacurate time and time again and there are several group actions being taken in the courts to have thousands of fines recinded, but for the average Joe it's not worth the hassle of fighting it in court so we just pay up and hold a grudge until the next State election.
Motorcyclists have historically been the only ones exempt from having a front plate, and the Government has a big fight on their hands with the Bike Lobby trying to make them comply.
