Frozen trunk lid

I am trying to get my '78 Spider back in running condition but I can't get my trunk lid open. The ring that holds the lock in place broke off and the lock fell inside. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get into the trunk.

one accepted method is to remove the license plate and drill a small hole about 3 1/2" below the top edge of the rear panel, then use a thin blade screwdriver to push the latch lever over. Then seal the hole with rtv and re-install the lic plate

try using a wire like from a coat hanger and sticking it thru the lock hole to maybe get ahold of the rod that actuates the lock. then maybe you can move it and pop the lock. i would try this before making a hole. just a thought. no offense ol gran wizard.

I locked my sole set of keys (at the time, I've got a spare now) in the trunk a month or so ago. I was not crazy about drilling a hole either. So I removed the license plate. Then I removed one of the plastic nut/clips that the screws holding the plate screw into -- the one in the upper right hand corner. I fed in a wire coat hanger with a hook bent into the end of it and after just two tries, popped the trunk open! I found that the hook on the end of coat hanger works better if bent into a V for strength.

With your trunk lock hole available for the coat hanger, it should be very easy to feed the hanger in, catch it on the bottom of the latch mechanism and pop the trunk open.
