SGE (Shiny Grill Envy)

Post by Hootch »

Thanks to this forum, I got a bad case of SGE (Shiny Grill Envy), and there's only one way to cure that. (no, not "cowbell").

I haven't quite finished the job, but am sharing my learnings so far:

1. There are two kinds of paint strippers. The good ones and the crappy ones. Citristrip was messy, but worked really well, and didn't make me dizzy from fumes.

2. No matter how shiny the cap, rattle can paint is still rattle can paint. I knew that going in though. The bottom grill is painted with 4 coats of Krylon Silver Metallic, and I eventually used 4 coats of clear coat too, though the difference is so slight that I didn't bother to take a photo.

I actually prefer the au naturale over the painted one, but these grills have been through the wringer, so there's a lot to cover up.

I'll post a pic once these are finished and installed.
