When I bought my '81 the cowl was off and all the bits missing. So in trying to put it together...screws are what hold it down but is there something between the cowl and the body, rubber gasket? I do see the one that runs the front width of the cowl. I mean to ask about the screw holes; anything between the metal?

Here is where my question is directed: where the cowl screws to the body, the red arrow direction, is there not a rubber ring or gasket or anything between the cowl and the body? Just metal to metal?
Other issue: the fitting in the corner is surely for a rubber screw, but the long ones, like on the cowl itself, are too long. I found this short one in the box of parts the PO left and it
seems to be right. Why can't I find short ones for sale at any of the parts suppliers? Or is there something else that goes in that corner fitting? Hm, or is there no such thing as a short rubber screw, just long ones cut down to size?

Metal on metal, yes. I had to drill mine out ('80 FI) a little oversize and use #12 sheet metal screws.
The rubber posts on mine ended up being too short, so I added a couple of hard rubber square ads to the top when I put it back together. Maybe that is why only the long ones are sold? Easy to cut down with a good razor knife, anyway.

My '78 had a rubber there. Just picked up a new one at VAS. Part of the rubber goes under the cowl and it also has a flap above it that contacts hood:
