cold spider problem

Post by lorddemoya »

hello all,
I have owned a spider for 7 yrs now and fortunately have never had to ask for help. I now have a problem that Icannot figure out. I have a 1982 fiat spider 2000 with 2.0 & bosh fuel injection. When I first start the veh its spits and sputters and will not stay running unless I keep the engine reved up. Once the veh is warm it will run like a champ. I have replaced
the fuel pump and the fuel filter. Please help :( .

to really diagnose a FI system, you need the troubleshooting manual and a volt/ohmmeter. But if your only problem is cold running, you may have a bad temp sender or a loose connection to it. The sender mounts in the tee water outlet and is critical to FI operation. If the connector fits tightly, you'll need to test the sender when the engine is cold. The troubleshooting manual has a chart for temp/resistance for the sender throughout its' range

I believe the troubleshooting manual is available on line

There's a great troubleshhoting resource at http://www.mirafiori.com/~thad/fi/ Also includes great explanations of the jetronic's components w/lots of pics.

Thanks for all your help guys . Turns out the timing belt has slipped. I quess the first step is going to be replacing the belt. Is there a chance my valves are bent? Are the 2.0 interferance engines.

the 2L are non-interference engines as far as the valves go. It is possible for the aux shaft to contact the crankshaft though. The result is usually a bent aux shaft or a broken block. If yours still runs consider yourself lucky.

Well I quess im not so lucky.. I installed a new timing belt. I had trouble timing it. It would not stay running. I finaly got it to time unplugging the temp sendor and now when I plug the temp sendor in it dies... I tried a new sendor and it still does the same thing.

normally these cars won't run with the temp sensor unplugged. It's time to start with the basics; fuel pressure, air leaks, clean tight electrical connections
