Rear axel-differential whining
Rear axel-differential whining
Hi all, I changed the rear axel oil and boy what sludge came out. She's whining still and my question is, will it get better now that its filled with fresh fluid? It also has a bit of a leak on the seal where the drive shaft meets the rear axel, whats the best way to stop this? A few people mentioned adding Blue Devil or Bars leak? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. By the way the car runs great!!!

Re: Rear axel-differential winding
There was a really good write up someone did here a while back on replacing that differential oil seal. Very detailed and well written. It should be able to be found with the search function.

Re: Rear axel-differential winding
If winding = whining and excessive noise, that's a bad sign but not necessarily rebuild time. Its certainly not going to get better with a fluid change alone though.
I would disconnect the drive shaft from the pinion yoke and make sure that yoke has no side-to-side play. Not rotational play but lateral play, so try to move the yoke either up and down and towards/away from the wheels/tires and see if it moves a bit.
Reason I say this is that if the pinion seal is leaking, odds are good that its because the pinion itself has too much play, esp. on a 79 or newer rear end.
Check that and report back.
