Hi all,
Just bought the car, took off the air filter and found this. Any ideas why those twist ties are there and what I should do about it?
Can anyone tell me what these twist ties are doing here?

They are keeping the loose ball and socket on the linkage from coming apart until it can be sold to someone else so the new owner can fix it or they did it so it would not keep falling apart so they could drive home one day and never got around to fixing the problem..

Given the wear marks on the zip ties I'm going to go with the latter...DieselSpider wrote:They are keeping the loose ball and socket on the linkage from coming apart until it can be sold to someone else so the new owner can fix it or they did it so it would not keep falling apart so they could drive home one day and never got around to fixing the problem..

Looks like at a minimum your missing the metal clip that keeps the linkage on the ball.
If you look to the right in the picture you can see the clip on the accelerator cable end.
You can pick up a clip from various parts dealers, e.g.:

Those little clips are so easy to lose.. I've had my engine bay swallow more than one. I keep a handful in my toolbox for good measure I can only imagine the P.O. didn't have the luxury of extras or the patience to wait on one in the mail and decided the solution sure him/her well enough.
