78 Spider - trani oil fill location

Post by MrBlimp »

I've reviewed the manual - it states "After transmission is installed in car, add 1 3/4 quarts of SAE 90 oil containing antiwear additives. Do not use EP oil."

My manual (5sp) trani is leaking and probably needs more oil. So where do you fill it - there doesn't seem to be any indication in the manual of the fill location, just the drain.

The fill port is on the passenger's side of the transmission a couple of inches above the drain port. Always remove the fill port plug before removing the drain port plug.

Try to change trans oil on level ground and fill the trans case until it just starts to drip out of the filler hole. Using a pump from the side or gravity line from the top. I would be careful with any additives in the oil. GL1 is a basic 90 weight mineral oil. additives can have all kinds of negative effects on the yellow metals in your syncro mesh trans. If you remove trans pan for any reason make sure it is clean with new gasket properly torques down or you will battle a trans pan leak for the near future.

And if you remove the pan, flatten out all the dimples around the attaching bolts thoroughly before you reinstall the pan, or it will leak there, even with a new gasket.

Flattening out the dimples. Great idea. My 78 differential has a minor leak on back plate. Bet if I took it off again ( replaced gasket months ago and bet that is the problem) and gently flattened around bolt holes,, it would help.

As well as the main fill and drain plugs, don't forget this small drain plug, at the rear of the transmission, bottom of this picture. It drains about a 1/2 cup that gets trapped behind some sort of interior baffle, and usually comes out pretty dirty. No separate fill for it, just the main fill.
