How do I tighten the heater hose fitting in head near firewall?

I replaced the straight 5/8" fitting at the back of the head that connects to the heater hose when I changed the head gasket. The head gasket is no longer leaking but the heater hose fitting is. The fitting has no wrench flats so I coated it with thread sealant and thought it was tight enough. It was hard to grip with the head off, with the head on it looks impossible. Does anyone have any advice for sealing these threads and getting it tight without removing the head?
