I replaced my started with one of those small gear reduction starters. In the process I found the real issue, a loose ground cable. The new one works great.
The question is, what do I do with the old starter core? Does it have any value?
Starter core or boat anchor?

I think Midwest Bayless will actually give you credit toward other parts for it. They will rebuild it and they will pay a standard core in store credit. I did that with several of my "spare" parts.
