I don't like seeing any car manufacturer go bankrupt

Re: Yugo bankruptcy
Agreed, it is really too bad. Peoples struggle with new businesses that they have little experience in all the time; it is actually a core necessary element of entrepreneurial success here in the US. The taking of risks, trying to learn new ventures, all of that stuff. It rings a loud bell with me in my own experience in the electronics industry here in New England in the 80's.

Re: Yugo bankruptcy
Yes, it is too bad. "Creative destruction." "Survival of the fittest." All the nasty things that separate the world as it is from the one we'd sentimentally prefer.
But then again... who in the end is willing to buy a poorly made product when there are so many better ones available?
In the case of the Bricklin-sold in the USA Yugo, oh, the stories of pain.
Yup. 'Tis life.

Re: Yugo bankruptcy
I think they made the Yugoslavian SKS and M98 at one time or another.

Re: Yugo bankruptcy
I sold both, one financed the Computronics, the other the AR gear reduction starter..... Given what is going on in MA now, I really regret selling the SKS.

I've made it a policy never to sell a gun to finance another non-gun related purchase...i may have to save up a little longer, but I've always regretted selling guns far more than I've regretted not having something else.RRoller123 wrote:I sold both, one financed the Computronics, the other the AR gear reduction starter..... Re: Yugo bankruptcy
The reason they went bankrupt was the war.
Soon as there is a hint of war, the us government seizes all assets.
I was approached right after the war to buy 3 warehouses full of brand new yugo parts.
We are talking about acres piled 20-30 ft high of brand new yugo 10 year old parts.
Now worthless, you could not get parts, guess why?
Ya the idiot i talked to wanted 70 cents on the dollar. It cost the govenrment millions to scrap this stuff.
The warehouse cost was more then the value of the goods.
Funny was just talking about Charlie Preston, the second fiat dealer in NA.
Roosevelt was the first. We had lunch at Charlie and his wifes place in york pa.I told Charlie nice shack, multi milion dollar home 30 years ago.
Awesome hosts. We had 7 people to empty his fiat inventory at his shop and we bought the rights to his fiat distributorship. Then there was merigs and the others.Pete angel was at merigs.

Re: Yugo bankruptcy
company's assets were sold off to various buyers during 2000's, fiat being largest single buyer.
company that went bancrupt in the end had 3 employees and zero assets, so it existed only on paper.
factory itself was bombed by US planes during 1999 "kosovo" campaign, although it's quite far away from actual province of kosovo.
part of assembly line was destroyed, as well as paint shop. it was rebuilt and resumed production in 2000, working untill 2008 when it was sold to fiat. now new fiat 500L is made there.
Zastava weapons factory is located on other side of city, 10km away from car plant, and mostly built underground, so it would take a nuke to disable it.
who ever made a decision to bomb the car plant, did it based on false inteligence or with some other motive in mind.
assets of yugo in US, parts warehouses included, were "dead stock" so it was not a significant loss for company. some of those parts made their way back into serbia, so nowdays full kits for installing aircon into yugos are available here, new soft tops for convertible version... all with english labeled boxes and instructions only in english inside.
why did Yugo company go under is a long story and bombing it certanly didn't help, but basically it's a story of predatory capitalism that took over the country after year 2000.
what you americans know as yugo was one of models made by Yugo motor company.
there were two more slightly bigger models and various commercial vehicles. they were not good cars by any means, but were good value and for that price, one couldn't expect much more.
yugo parts warehouse contained some stuff that fiat fans would find very usefull. i'll just mention valve adjustment shims...

I really dont know how to do this anymore, nor do i care to.Scott Phelps posted the damage on mirafiori.
Now what interests me is you mentioned zastava. We own a zastava locust 750.
Made in Yugoslavia. By far the best machine we have ever owned, the cats and jd machines even today do not compare, mind you this is a fiat forum dealing with 30-40 year old fiats, lancias and alfas.
It was built with american standard bolts?????
Its such a piece of shit after 10 or more years of ownership,And it was older when we got it, Many hours i need a oil cap.Is there warranty!!!LOL
I dont lift anything without that machine.Almost as good as a fiat, but fiats have oil cap gasket problems also.
Its a weird oil cap.It runs without a cap right now,for at least a year.
These fiat guys must drive you crazy.lol

if it was originally intended for US market, of course it was built with bolts in colonial and not metric measures.
what's zastava 750 locust?
