Which Engine ,Gear box and differential oils ??
HI
Just bought a 1979 Spyder and want to change the vital fluids . Engine oil was like tar so I suppose all the other fluids are well past their "best by" dates and they all should be changed
Do FIAT engines need high zinc oils to protect the cams ?
I understand the gear box oil should not have EP additives , presumably because they would affect any bronze parts ?
The differential oil needs EP additives
Can any one suggest suitable oils ? or the relevant API classifications?
I contacted Castrol technical services;their response was useless , clearly written by a hack lawyer intent on avoiding any liability for any thing !
Cheers

Maxdog I am sure you are going to get a lot of different views here;
Not sure where you are, however in Australia I use either Nulon or Penrite Oils. Others in Canada and US use Shell Rotella, Redline, etc
Engine - dependents on temp ranges However generally 15W 40 or SAE 40 with zinc
Gearbox - GL1 Non EP. (some members swear by Redline).
Dif - 80W 90 EP or SAE 90
Plenty of opinions so all he best with the decision.

And more opinions on antifreeze!
I use whatever name brand 10W-40 non-synthetic is on sale, zinc additive (ZDDP Maxx), Redline gear oil for transmission and any name brand 80W-90 for rear diff. I use Evans waterless coolant for antifreeze, but not sure I would do that again (expensive and seems more prone to leaks).

Re: Which Engine ,Gear box and differential oils ??
Did an oil change this weekend. Of course I did not plan anything in advance . But for you folks out in Northern California be warned. I went to three parts stores and they had exactly 2 10W-40 oils on the shelf (both full synthetic) and nothing heavier than that. These oils are simply going the way of the buffalo.
15W40 was only available as diesel oil, so I used that and a bottle of zinc additive.

Wow. Real auto parts stores, or the likes of O'Reilly's, Autozone, and Walmart?SteinOnkel wrote:I went to three parts stores and they had exactly 2 10W-40 oils on the shelf (both full synthetic) and nothing heavier than that.

EP stands for "Extreme Pressure", so differential oil at the store may list either one, or both. Same thing.tima01864 wrote:I am still looking for EP

Nope, real ones. Not talking about "OhReally you gotta order it?"18Fiatsandcounting wrote:Wow. Anything's available on the internet, of course. But if you're thinking "oh hang on, I'll change the oil on the Fiat today" like I did you may be in for a surprise.

Wow Part 2. Something's wrong there, as almost every differential past present and likely future uses EP... Even Walmart carries EP differential oil. Perhaps your sales clerk was, as they say, clueless?tima01864 wrote:I asked at the parts store NAPA, etc., The did not have anything EP or Extreme Pressure
