Camshaft R & R

I apologize if this has been discussed earlier but I couldn't find in the archives a description on how to take the camshafts out of the cam boxes. Specifically, how do I lock down the cam from rotating so I can take the cam gears off? I have new gaskets and oil seals

What I've done in the past of no locking tool is available is to wrap an old timing belt around the gear and grab the 2 ends with vice-grips. Then I use an impact wrench while holding the vice-grips.
