carburetor selection

Post by piperstan10 »

I have a 73 124 fiat spider with a 1979 2,000 cc carbureted engine. The ignition is electronic (not mechanical points) with vacuum advance. What is the best carburetor for good performance? And, are these carburetors available? I have no smog requirements.

Currently the engine hesitates (almost stalls) when accelerating from idle/startup.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You need to check which intake manifold you have, because the stock 2000 intake manifold is very restrictive and will limit any gains from a new carb. The least expensive carb would be a Weber or EMPI 32/36DFEV, they offer good performance and are easy to adapt.
What carb is on there now?

I have a weber 34adf which I just removed and am in the process of cleaning. The carb is probably 15 years old - don't remember when I purchased? The manifold I believe is an earlier version perhaps 1973 which I (hand) ported and polished. the car has been running ok - but recently (not used very much) started acting up especially at low rpm's. I have cleaned the carburetor jets/and channels using carb cleaner. Looking for a procedure (and specs for adjusting the float?) ---- looked like the carburetor bowl was low when I removed - about 1" of fuel in bottom. Electric fuel pump.

Too bad IAP is no longer around they had a great refefence source.

I'm happy with the 34adf I have on mine, but the only reference I have is the 32 I replaced.
Maybe it is just a matter of adjusting and cleaning.
Did it just recently start having issues on an otherwise good running engine?

I have been happy up till now. Do you have the manual or do you know the float settings? BTW in going back through my memory, I recall that I used an intake manual from a 76 -124 engine, that was recommended. So I ported this manifold to my block.

I found on line a manual for a 32 ADFA which has 6mm and 14mm for the float?

Thanks

The specs for the 32ADFA should be the same.

Update: Thoroughly cleaned carburetor.

Attempted to adjust float level but the float measurements (fuel level SPEC for 32 ADF - 6 to7 mm- currently set at about 4 mm) did not make sense in that the bowl fuel level would have been too low - Perhaps the float valve is a different model than original (or shutting off late) - which does not make sense since it has not been changed since new? The current fuel level is ~ 1" w/o float and covers all ports. This is roughly less that 1/2 the total bowl capacity -

End result is that the cleaning corrected the problems with low speed hesitation.

Thanks to all for the assistance!

I need read up to understand more about level of fuel in carburetor bowl!

6mm including gasket. The float bowl doesn't need to be full, if it is, there's something wrong.
